In his weekly commentary, "Fear and loathing in Las Standish," Info Northeast writer Julius Muller gives you his take on the growing controversy that surrounds the Standish Maximum Security Prison.

When I read Jules' take on the situation, it brings about the feeling of "Yes, send us the Gitmo prisoners, we can handle it!" Think of the jobs, think of the money. We used to be a land of "yes, we can." Now all I hear is how poor the government is at taking care of its citizens. If you want the government to take care of you, go to Canada, if you want freedom, start fighting for it.

While I am in favor of "Gitmo North" if that is the only viable solution to keeping Standish Prison open, I am curious as to why Julius tries to paint the problem as caused by Republicans. I think Bush left office over 8 months ago.
I also wonder if a Michigan location is the best idea considering that we have the largest population of Middle Eastern immigrants in the US. Terrorism is not a concern for me, but I also do not live in Standish. Julius, tone it down a little! Much of your argument makes a lot of sense, but your ravings make you sound like a wack ball.

No more fear mongering please that is so 2008. This is the home of the brave let's start being fearless. Be the change you want to see in America.

Sadly not many have responded to the invitation to add comments. Americans have become very complacent, it seems no one gives crap anymore and theres always lame excuses. So go ahead Rave on Mr. Muller, at the very least you got a reply.

I'm all for keeping Standish open but I don't know why we had to close it in the first place. Were we not renting bed space to other states? Why not? I believe the courts are to soft on criminals anyway and now we let them out early. What message did that give them? While stationed in Saudi I saw a Lexius with the keys in the ignition parked along the sidewalk in town with groceries in the back seat, and the windows down. Do you know why? Because there's enough deterrent there that no one in their right mind would take the chance to steal (and loss a hand). DETERRENT ! ! !
Rent the whole place to California? What? They're paying bills with IOUs now. What good did that do? How did that help our budget problems? Then there's the possibility of the gangs coming here to support their brothers in prison. That doesn't sound like a good thing to me.
As for GITMO prisoners.....those are federal prisoners. Therefore the current guards would lose their jobs and new federal guards would have to be brought in. I don't mind that the feds move in but what about the friends and neighbors we have now that will lose their jobs and have to relocate?
All for what?
I think we need state government that controls spending to what money is coming in. Just like we are expected to do. Is that so much to ask for? Quit the free money programs. Make people responsible for themselves and there decisions. You want six kids you'd better be able to buy food and supply shelter for them. How about pay as you go? You want museum? Pay for it. You want football? Pay for it. You want something in Detroit? Detroit better pay for it. Why make me pay for it? I won't ever get a chance to use it in Detroit.
Responsibility. I'll gladly give you credit for the good you do and the bad. Can you handle that? layta
